Theme for Guest Room: Matthew Leifheit

Guest Room aims to spark collaborations. That’s why Matthew Leifheit is teaming up with Rachel Stern (@rachelstern), a New York based photographer whose work challenges conventions of beauty and promotes escapist, constructivist fantasy. in chosing the theme for this instalment. Rachel has set the following framework:

Bread & Roses // Kitsch Can’t Wait

The famous leftist doctrine "The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too.” insists that access to beauty is as essential to our very lives and access to bread. Beauty fuels us to be able to imagine the better futures for which we fight our revolutions. Kitsch is a means to an immediate end - a proletarian demand that despite living under the abject oppression of capitalism we can claim our own moments of beauty and instances of wonder and awe. I would like to see photographs which are using construction or kitsch sensibilities to claim moments of beauty - be they terrible or serene - for the now. Which insist on roses alongside our bread.

Submissions for this Guest Room should consider this concept, whether explicitly or abstractly. Matthew Leifheit will be working with the quote in mind when making his selection for her Guest Room.
